Carishma /// Biography
Not to be confused with "Charisma"
Carishma's breakout single 'Glow In The Dark' is available on iTunes
It’s not every day that veteran hit-makers like Timbaland, Rodney Jerkins, and Claude Kelly agree to work with an unsigned artist, but not every artist has Carishma’s energy, drive, and talent. Hard work and entertaining people are in this singer and songwriter’s blood. Carishma’s Indian-born mother is a former news anchor and Bollywood actress and singer, while her father is a self-made businessman who put himself through college making pizzas and bartending. Carishma learned early on that nothing worth having comes easy — a lesson that has stayed with her as she launches her career as an independent pop artist with her first single “Glow In the Dark,” produced by Jerkins, who has worked with three of Carishma’s idols, Janet Jackson, Britney Spears, and Lady Gaga.
MTV.com has raved that “’Glow in the Dark’ mixes old-school Britney bubble gum with a dreamy guitar riff and sexy, hypnotic beat that perfectly matches Carishma's dance goddess-y persona." The accompanying video, directed by Taj Stansberry (Jennifer Lopez's "On the Floor"), showcases the singer's silky smooth voice, exotic beauty, and a unique fashion sense that pays tribute to her Indian heritage. A constant multi-tasker, Carishma co-designed much of the clothing and jewelry she wears in the video.
Carishma is currently gearing up to release a new track, “Like A Rainbow” — a song inspired by her close friends in the gay community and the struggles they have faced coming out to their families. Wanting to show her support, Carishma wrote the song with songwriter Claude Kelly (Bruno Mars, Jessie J), and created the concept for its video in which she marshals members of a “gay army” to fight for their rights. Carishma is donating 100 percent of the artist proceeds from the sale of “Like A Rainbow” to the Ali Forney Center — a non-profit organization that provides shelter and services to homeless LGBT youth in New York City. Carishma is also a supporter of LGBT watchdog group GLAAD and has posed for a portrait for California’s NoH8 Campaign.
The right to be treated with dignity regardless of sexual orientation is an issue close to Carishma’s heart and she has always followed her heart when it comes to her music. Growing up in New Jersey, Carishma discovered her passion for performing at the age of five, when she would corner her parents at the dinner table and not allow them to eat until she had finished singing and dancing along to the latest pop hits. She continued to pursue her dream of being an entertainer, taking voice lessons and recording her first song at 13, followed by a series of tracks for an independent label before finishing high school.
While attending New York University, Carishma hustled her way into recording sessions with some of the music industry’s top songwriters and producers, including Timbaland, who produced and is featured on the propulsive dance-pop track "Keep Hangin' On," and Jerkins, with whom she recorded “Glow in the Dark” — a feel-good anthem about first love that has connected with female fans across the country. Those songs are just a taste of what’s to come when Carishma releases her debut album later this year.
